More powerful than a hurricane

What could possibly wield the force of one of nature's most powerful challenges? The determination of the Framatome ANP and Florida Power & Light (FPL) team. To install a pressurizer and reactor vessel head at St. Lucie, they went beyond responsiveness to brave some unpleasant hurricane conditions and meet all quality, schedule and dose metrics.

A huge success, this installation marked the first time in the world that a PWR pressurizer was replaced. The effort required an enormous amount of coordination with teams from FPL, Mammouet, and our subsidiary, SGT. Thanks to prior experience, these teams were able to make up time lost due to Hurricane Wilma. Plus, our track record with steam generator and reactor vessel head installation contributed to getting the job done on schedule. The customer relied heavily on our welding experience and understanding of the requirements to cut out the old components and deliver a precision fit on the new ones. This first-of-a-kind installation also resulted in no weld defects on the Surge Line Weld. Success? It can be as simple as a determined, seamless team effort.

Get a jump on materials management

In as little as two days, you can get all of the latest information on materials management. But more importantly, you can build relationships that provide solutions for requirements that all PWRs must meet by June 21, 2006.

NEI plans to host an Alloy 600 Implementers Workshop, March 6-7, 2006 in Orlando. This packed two-day seminar will target engineers responsible for implementing Alloy 600 plans. Framatome ANP will have representatives there to offer possible solutions for your unique situation and get to know you. The overall workshop will provide the latest information to aid in your planning as well. FANP experts have already worked with several utilities to formulate custom Alloy 600 plans. Your planning helps us plan. As a reminder - Materials Reliability Program Generic Guidance for Alloy 600 Management (MRP-126) was distributed to US PWR Chief Nuclear Officers with a transmittal letter dated December 21, 2004 indicating the start of the 18-month implementation schedule. Each plant shall develop and document an Alloy 600 management plan, defining the processes it intends to use to maintain the integrity and operability of each Alloy 600/82/182 component for the remaining life of the plant. Plans are required to be in place at every operating PWR by June 21, 2006. And we're here to help. See us at the conference or give us a call and let's start discussing what we can do to meet your specific needs.

Replace a head in a short outage? No problem.

What delivers the industry's most reliable replacement reactor vessel head (RVH) while achieving a 25-day refueling outage world record? The team of Framatome ANP and PSEG Nuclear. On November 6 this remarkable feat was accomplished, a full ten days ahead of schedule and four days ahead of the current world record. What made the difference? It all started with an ongoing strategic alliance agreement formed between the two companies in 2002.

"The success of the Salem 1 outage can be attributed to many areas of preparation and execution," said Al Reynolds, AREVA's Regional Manager for PSEG. "Most notable was the individual employee dedication to safety and human performance; the rigorous reviews of lessons learned and the implementation of the resulting corrective actions from the previous outage; the intense pre-outage planning and preparation; the improved communications both internally and with the customer organization; the contingency planning; our jointly well-developed schedule; and returning crews operating under excellent hands-on FANP field management with outstanding teamwork."

Demonstrating commitment to AREVA's Sustainable Development principle of Customer Satisfaction, employees from CR&R, Engineering, ONS, PMO, Quality Assurance, and SGS all contributed to the success of the project which extended to in-service inspections as well as refurbishment of the customer's reactor coolant pump motors at FANP's Pump and Motor Service Center. Employees from the Jeumont facility in France also traveled to the site to help with the outage. Framatome ANP previously completed a reactor vessel head replacement at Salem 2 during the spring 2005 outage.

The Salem 1 outage had an excellent safety record with no OSHA recordables, rework or human performance issues. "These measured metrics for the reactor head replacement were outstanding and a world class performance," said Dick Labott, PSEG project manager for the Salem 1 and 2 reactor head replacements. In a note sent to Bob Pruitt, the on-site lead for the project, and Brad Hawkins, Labott said "your leadership through both 2005 reactor head replacements contributed to the two best and shortest Salem refueling outages ever. I want to personally congratulate you for your leadership and simply stating, a job well done."

Framatome ANP is fabricating and will deliver replacement steam generators for Salem 2 during 2007 and will be working with our co-owned subsidiary, SGT, to perform the installation during the spring 2008 refueling outage.

Want weld overlay options? It's all here.

In early February, once again Framatome ANP will host a weld overlay demonstration focused on Westinghouse pressurizer nozzle butt weld mitigation at our Technical Training Center in Lynchburg, Virginia. Our overlay significantly improves the residual stress state near the nozzle / safe-end ID and provides a structural reinforcement with a highly PWSCC-resistant material. Plus, it allows for a geometry and surface finish for PDI qualified UT of the final configuration, ensuring cost-effective NDE for future inspections.

We design and analyze the structural weld overlay according to the intent of ASME Code Case N-504-2 and the pending Code Case N-740 addressing dissimilar metal weld overlays. Our teams also provide ASME code reconciliations and relief request support as part of the design process to ensure that final ultrasonic examination of the weld overlay meets ASME Section XI, Appendix 8 requirements.

Several variables should be considered when designing weld overlays on dissimilar metal butt-welds. These include but are not limited to consideration of dose field near the component, space envelope and potential physical interferences, and ease of future inspection for adjacent safe-end to piping welds. Contact Dan Schlader for additional details about weld overlay and the upcoming demo.

Global resources equal instant bolt solution

Fast. As in knowing where to turn. Who to rely on. How to get what you need. And when to apply it. These qualities have become hallmarks of Framatome ANP. Because we know that innovation, combined with effective listening and the globe's widest range of resources, gets real results. It was mid-November. An urgent call was received from one of our customers. "Our baffle-to-baffle bolt in the core baffle plate seems as if it's backed out." Did we mention fast? How about a solution that includes a mast-type manipulator capable of inspection, repair or replacement? Sure. We can do that. How about completing the job in just 56 hours? With just a few of our own calls and some quick, responsive action, here's how we delivered.

To ensure integrity of the customer's core we determined that, at a minimum, we should inspect rows 4, 5 & 6 of the baffle-to-former bolts. Our teams stood ready to handle a potential repair or replacement challenge if defective bolts were found. Framatome ANP confronted the challenge on parallel fronts - developing a mast-type manipulator capable of inspection, repair or replacement, but also looking within our vast global resources for an instant, off-the-shelf solution. And we found it. Our German colleagues had the SUbmarine System for Inspection (SUSI). And it had been used successfully over and over again for this type of application. Our mission? Get it here, quickly and safely adapt a new set of ultrasonic transducers, then deploy to site.

We rapidly developed the UT technique to inspect the bolts, then demonstrated and tested it on samples of the same type of bolts slated for inspection. This entire process, from phone call to delivery, took only two weeks. But there's more. The examination on-site progressed so well, the scope was expanded to encompass ALL 8 rows or 864 of the baffle-to-former bolts. All completed in just 56 hours. Did we mention that the inspection began on Thanksgiving Day? Want to rely on someone to take the hassle and worry out of a last-minute challenge? You can always count on Framatome ANP to stand beside you - even during your most overwhelming circumstances
