Replace a head in a short outage? No problem.
What delivers the industry's most reliable replacement reactor vessel head (RVH) while achieving a 25-day refueling outage world record? The team of Framatome ANP (FANP) and PSEG Nuclear. On November 6 this remarkable feat was accomplished, a full ten days ahead of schedule and four days ahead of the current world record. What made the difference? It all started with an ongoing strategic alliance agreement formed between the two companies in 2002.

"The success of the Salem 1 outage can be attributed to many areas of preparation and execution," said Al Reynolds, AREVA's Regional Manager for PSEG. "Most notable was the individual employee dedication to safety and human performance; the rigorous reviews of lessons learned and the implementation of the resulting corrective actions from the previous outage; the intense pre-outage planning and preparation; the improved communications both internally and with the customer organization; the contingency planning; our jointly well-developed schedule; and returning crews operating under excellent hands-on FANP field management with outstanding teamwork."

Demonstrating commitment to AREVA's Sustainable Development principle of Customer Satisfaction, employees from CR&R, Engineering, ONS, PMO, Quality Assurance, and SGS all contributed to the success of the project which extended to in-service inspections as well as refurbishment of the customer's reactor coolant pump motors at FANP's Pump and Motor Service Center. Employees from the Jeumont facility in France also traveled to the site to help with the outage. Framatome ANP previously completed a reactor vessel head replacement at Salem 2 during the spring 2005 outage.

The Salem 1 outage had an excellent safety record with no OSHA recordables, rework or human performance issues. "These measured metrics for the reactor head replacement were outstanding and a world class performance," said Dick Labott, PSEG project manager for the Salem 1 and 2 reactor head replacements. In a note sent to Bob Pruitt, the on-site lead for the project, and Brad Hawkins, Labott said "your leadership through both 2005 reactor head replacements contributed to the two best and shortest Salem refueling outages ever. I want to personally congratulate you for your leadership and simply stating, a job well done."

Framatome ANP is fabricating and will deliver replacement steam generators for Salem 2 during 2007 and will be working with our co-owned subsidiary, SGT, to perform the installation during the spring 2008 refueling outage.
