Want weld overlay options? It's all here.
In late January, we held our second weld overlay demonstration at FANP’s Technical Training Center in Lynchburg, Virginia. This demo focused on Westinghouse pressurizer nozzle butt weld mitigation, and 28 representatives from 8 utilities attended. Our overlay significantly improves the residual stress state near the nozzle / safe-end ID and provides a structural reinforcement with a highly PWSCC-resistant material. Plus, it allows for a geometry and surface finish for PDI qualified UT of the final configuration, ensuring cost-effective NDE for future inspections.

We design and analyze the structural weld overlay according to the intent of ASME Code Case N-504-2 and the pending Code Case N-740 addressing dissimilar metal weld overlays. Our teams also provide ASME code reconciliations and relief request support as part of the design process to ensure that final ultrasonic examination of the weld overlay meets ASME Section XI, Appendix 8 requirements.

Several variables should be considered when designing weld overlays on dissimilar metal butt-welds. These include but are not limited to consideration of dose field near the component, space envelope and potential physical interferences, and ease of future inspection for adjacent safe-end to piping welds. Contact Dan Schlader for additional details about our weld overlay options. We’re here to meet your specific need.
